Overview

Each fall, the team puts on a spectacular synchronized swimming show to promote the beauty of the sport and to raise money to defray team's traveling costs. As the only competitive team in New Jersey, the Aquaducks must travel for meets.  Last year the girls swam in Connecticut, Massachussets and Seattle, WA.  This year local meets extend as far as Buffalo, NY and the Nationals competition is in Oxford, OH.

ENJOY SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING AT THE
WESTFIELD AREA Y AQUADUCK'S 19th ANNUAL WATER SHOW
“A SPLASH OF SYNCHRO”

October 2011 – Looking for an entertaining event for the whole family?  Come see amazing acrobatics and graceful water dancing at the Westfield Area Y Aquaducks’ Synchronized Swimming Show.  The annual fundraising exhibition will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19th at 1 pm and 7 pm and Sunday, Nov. 20th at 1 pm at the Westfield Area Y at 220 Clark Street in Westfield.

Twenty-six talented girls from elementary through high school comprise the Aquaducks team, combining athletic swimming and dance skills synchronized to music.   The show includes multi-swimmer team routines as well as smaller solos, duets and trios. This year, they will perform to a variety of popular songs from different decades – including old favorites from Elvis and new hits from TV show GLEE.  Then, the audience can enjoy the hilarious antics of the “Aquadads and Bros,” featuring  some of the team’s brave family members.

Snacks, gifts and raffles will also be available.

Synchronized swimming has come light years from the original water ballet of Esther Williams.  Now these performance athletes include dramatic leaps and throws throughout their routines.  As you watch one girl rise into the air, remember that underneath her the rest of the team is forming a platform structure with only their own bodies, and then kicking furiously to push her up through the water…all with a smile!   The girls typically practice 6 - 12 hours a week in order to build their endurance and harmonize their movements, and the performances leave audiences breathless.

The nationally competitive team has been a part of the Y's programs for decades and consistently wins recognition.  Many of the Aquaducks’ team and small routines regularly qualify to participate in the Age Group Nationals meet, which invites only the top age group athletes to the largest synchronized swim meet in the world.  This summer the 16-17 age group team earned a ninth place finish overall at the Nationals competition held in Seattle.

As the only competitive team in New Jersey, the Aquaducks must travel for meets.  Last year the girls swam in locations as far as Haverhill, MA and Seattle, WA.  This year the Nationals competition is in Cleveland, Ohio.   The annual show raises funds to help defray the cost of the team's travel all over the U.S.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children under 12, and all proceeds go to support the team.  Tickets are available at the Welcome Center of the Westfield Area Y or through team members.  The shows often sell out early, so please purchase tickets in advance to ensure you don’t miss out.  For more information about the show or the team, contact Coach Kate Johnson at aquaducks@westfieldynj.org.
