2009 Annual Synchronized Swimming Show Press Release
ENJOY SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING AT THE
WESTFIELD AREA Y AQUADUCK'S 17th ANNUAL WATER SHOW
“A SPLASH OF SYNCHRO”
November 2009 -- Experience a real treat this fall as you watch the nationally-ranked Westfield Area Y Aquaducks perform in their 17th Annual Synchronized Swimming Show on Saturday, November 21st at 1 pm and 7 pm and Sunday, November 22nd at 1 pm. The show is at the Westfield Area Y at 220 Clark Street in Westfield.
Thirty-four amazing girls from third grade through high school comprise the Aquaducks team, combining super swimming and dance skills synchronized to music. The show includes multi-swimmer team routines as well as smaller duets and trios. This year, they will perform to a variety of popular songs from different decades, including a medley of Boy Bands, selected Show Tunes, and more. Then, you’ll laugh out loud at the annual Dads & Bro’s Routine, in which some of the braver Aquaduck dads and brothers offer a hilarious attempt to swim a routine for this
fund-raising show.
Synchronized swimming has come light years from the original water ballet of Esther Williams. Now these performance athletes include dramatic leaps and throws throughout their routines. As you watch one girl rise into the air, remember that underneath her the rest of the team is forming a platform structure with only their own bodies, and then kicking furiously to push her up through the water. The girls typically practice 6 - 10 hours a week in order to build their endurance and harmonize their movements, and the performances leave audiences breathless.
The nationally competitive team has been a part of the Y's programs for decades and consistently wins recognition. Aquaduck swimmers regularly qualify to compete in U.S. Junior Championships, Age Group National Championships and the U.S. Open. As the only competitive team in New Jersey, the Aquaducks must travel for meets. Last year the girls swam from Buffalo, New York to Gainesville, Florida. The annual show raises funds to help defray the cost of the team's travel all over the U.S.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children under 12, and all proceeds go to support the team. Tickets are available at the Welcome Center of the Westfield Area Y or through team members. The shows often sell out early, so please purchase tickets in advance to ensure you don’t miss out. For more information about the show or the team, contact Coach Kate Matusiak at 233-2700, ext. 324.
